what is kaizen?

A Hall for Continuous Improvement

The name Kaizen Kaikan reflects what we believe martial arts training should be. Kaizen means continuous improvement — the idea of making progress through small, consistent improvements over time. Kaikan (会館) can be translated as meeting hall or assembly hall — a place where people come together.

For us, Kaizen Kaikan is our “hall of continuous improvement”: a place where people come together to train, learn, develop and improve — both as martial artists and as individuals.

Our martial arts school

Kaizen Kaikan is a hybrid martial arts system influenced by Karate, Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our Karate is primarily influenced by Goju-Ryu and Kyokushin Karate, combined with principles and techniques from other Japanese martial arts and modern combat sports. The result is a practical and adaptable martial arts system with the variety of Mixed Martial Arts, while retaining a strong foundation in traditional Japanese martial arts, discipline and personal development.

THE KAIZEN APPROACH

Rather than trying to master everything at once, we believe in making progress one step at a time. Techniques and principles are broken down into their individual components, practised, refined and then brought together. Our syllabus is progressive, with each level building on what came before. Every lesson has a clear focus, with new skills linked to previous training so that students develop understanding rather than simply collecting techniques.

OUR AIM IS SIMPLE

Every time you train, improve something.  Martial arts should develop more than physical ability. Through regular training, students develop:
  • Confidence – overcoming challenges and achieving new goals.
  • Discipline – learning to practise consistently and control their actions.
  • Focus – developing concentration and attention to detail.
  • Coordination and balance – learning to move and control the body effectively.
  • Decision-making – learning to assess situations and respond appropriately.
  • Respect – learning to work with and respect training partners.
  • Teamwork – training together, communicating and supporting one another.
  • Resilience – learning that progress comes through patience, practice and persistence.
These are skills that extend beyond the dojo and into everyday life.
Always Improving
There is no final destination in martial arts. There is always something to refine, something new to learn and another step forward to take.
That is Kaizen Kaikan.
